After a prolonged and dedicated process, we are delighted to announce that Bishop Wilton Community Shop Ltd has purchased the shop building. Until now the community shop and café had been renting the building from a local family, who generously acquired it in 2019 and offered us a 20-year lease at a rent well below market rates. Without their support, we would not be celebrating this milestone today, and indeed, we might not even have a community shop.
COME AND JOIN US TO CELEBRATE
On Saturday 7 February at 5.15pm we will be cutting the ribbon on our newly acquired property – we would love for you to join us at the shop for a toast with a glass of fizz (please bring your own glass!) to celebrate this milestone. Hope to see you there!
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR BISHOP WILTON SHOP AND CAFÉ?
This purchase secures the shop and café for long-term community use. Thanks to the steadfast support of our members, the local community, and our dedicated volunteers, the shop has flourished, enabling us to achieve this exceptional accomplishment so early in its life—a testament to what we can achieve together and something of which we should all be immensely proud.
However, as a community venture, we urge everyone to continue embracing the “use it or lose it” ethos—your ongoing involvement – as a member, volunteer, customer or supplier – is essential to our success!
Owning the freehold means that any future investment in the building—such as an extension of the mezzanine level, or roof and floor repairs—will enhance a community asset, not one owned by someone else.
We will begin to explore possibilities to extend the mezzanine, which would provide much-needed storage and additional café seating to meet increasing demand.
WANT TO SUPPORT US AND BECOME PART OF OUR JOURNEY? By purchasing a share for £10 you can become a member of Bishop Wilton Community Shop and Café.
